Do you have enough pairs of socks for the trip? Did you remember to pack your toothbrush? What about your hemp products? Can you even take those on the plane?

While hemp may be federally legal, there is a ton of rules and red tape when it comes to compliance, often on a state by state basis. That is what makes traveling with hemp products so confusing. However, there are ways to get the answers needed without getting a headache.

What the Airlines Say About Hemp Products

The airlines adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the Transportation Security Administration (or TSA for short). The TSA offers a full list of restricted and prohibited items, as well as items that include special instructions. This list also includes hemp products, though it is listed under the Medical Marijuana section.

According to the TSA’s Security Screening page, hemp products are allowed under certain conditions. The TSA website states, “Marijuana and certain cannabis infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA.”

It is important to note that Delta THC products may not fall under these guidelines. The TSA warns that the final decision rests with the TSA officer checking your luggage on whether or not an item is allowed through screening. If you have a gut feeling that your Delta THC product may not be allowed through screening, then it may be best to leave it at home and purchase a smaller size product once you reach your destination or take an alternative product that will be allowed through screening at the airport.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to traveling with hemp products, each airline follows a set of rules outlined by the TSA that are designed to adhere to federal and state regulations. While hemp products are allowed, they are required to fall within certain guidelines.

If traveling with hemp products, it is important to keep the product in the container in which it was sold and keep a copy of the COA (Certificate of Analysis) when going through the baggage check. Please remember that all final decisions are left up to the TSA agent during the baggage check process. Even with these measures in place, a product may not be allowed on the plane.

When traveling during the holidays, we need our hemp products more than ever. But traveling with hemp products, especially products that contain Delta THC, can feel like traversing a minefield. This is especially true when it comes to traveling by plane. However, if utilizing the correct tools, traversing that mental minefield can become a lot less daunting. Knowing which hemp products you can fly with can help make your holiday travel plans go a bit more smoothly.

Please note that rules regarding hemp products set by an airline can change at any time. For questions regarding items prohibited/restricted from planes, please contact the airline you are flying with or reach out to the TSA via one of the options listed on their Contact Page.
